New trolleybus system in Verona: Vossloh Kiepe delivers traction equipment for 37 new trolleybuses

Vossloh Kiepe delivers 37 new trolleybuses to Verona together with the Dutch bus manufacturer APTS. The 18 m long vehicles are to be operated on two lines with a total length of 23.8 km.

The North Italian city of Verona at the Lake Garda is going to set up a new trolleybus system.
Therefore, it has placed an order for 37 state-of-the-art trolleybuses of the type VDL Citea with Vossloh Kiepe and APTS. It will be possible to operate these buses autonomously. Thus, they can drive electrically outside the city walls and autonomously in the city. This combination is important in a city like Verona to avoid overhead contact lines in the historical centre of the city.

For this reason the new low-floor vehicles will be equipped with diesel generator sets in accordance with the Euro 6 standard. The modern buses stand out due to their low energy consumption, which is achieved by way of supercaps. These energy storage units store surplus brake energy and make it available again for the next acceleration.

The buses are also going to be equipped with an automatic guidance system, which makes it possible to approach a stopping point safely and exactly, i.e. gaps towards the pavement are avoided and people with restricted mobility can therefore also board the buses easily. The 18 m long trolleybuses offer space for altogether 140 passengers. It is the intention to put the state-of-the-art vehicles into service in 2015 when the construction work of the two new lines has been finished.
