BSAG tests electric bus from Solaris with trend-settingtraction equipment from Vossloh Kiepe

The Bremer Straßenbahn AG (BSAG) has been testing the electric bus Solaris Urbino 8.9 LE elec¬tric since the middle of January. This bus, which is operated fully electrically, has been provided with traction equipment and an efficient energy management system from Vossloh Kiepe.

The 8.95 m long vehicle with seats and standing space for up to 62 persons is being operated on line 82 (ring line in Gröpelingen). It covers a distance of about 120 km per day, which corresponds more or less to the kilometric performance of a state-of-the-art battery-powered bus with one battery charge.

This performance is now going to be confirmed in the operation with passengers. According to Wilfried Eisenberg, spokesman of the board of the BSAG, it is the intention to find out whether a bus with such novel drive technology is a good investment in every respect. Above all, focus is on its operational suitability, its technical components and their maintenance friendliness, but the BSAG is also curious about the riding quality of the bus and about the passengers’ reactions on the new driving experience.

The specific feature of this environment-friendly bus is that it stores energy in lithium-ion batteries. It does without an internal combustion engine. The lithium-ion batteries cannot only be charged via a charging terminal in four hours, but also via a fast charging station, which reduces the charging time to less than 90 minutes and thus the down-time of the bus. Alternatively, the batteries can be charged via a plug-in connector plugged into a standard 400 V AC socket-outlet (63 A).

The compact charging device is on board. The batteries can also store the recovered braking energy. The vehicle is powered by a 120 kW asynchronous motor. The best possible interaction between the battery, the power train and the recharging unit is controlled intelligently by the Kiepe Advanced Energy Management System so that optimal operation of the vehicle is ensured.
